Phenol-formaldehyde resins

Application: Phenol-formaldehyde resins are used as an adhesive for plywood, chipboard, MDF and OSB manufacturing.

Phenol-formaldehyde resins have also other application area, they are used in manufacturing mineral wool, abrasives, refractory and friction materials and rubber products.

Phenol-formaldehyde resins — olygomeric products of the phenol - aldehyde polycondensation. Depending on its conditions and phenol-formaldehyde proportion resol (thermoreactive) and novolac (thermoplastic) resins are synthesized. Resoles are used in industrial wood based board production.

Resoles (thermo reactive resins) are synthesized by polycondensation of formaldehyde to phenol molar excess in the presence of the basic - type catalyst (caustic, barium hydroxide, ammonia). Synthesized olygomers are the mixture of lined and branched molecules containing reactive methylol groups or methylenether bridges. Average count of phenol molecules in olygomers is 2 to 8. Some resins are monomeric hydroximethilenphenoles (phenolic alcohol).

Ability of resoles to transit into non-fusible and non-soluble condition without curing agents under either heating to 110 – 180° or adding catalysts – strong mineral or organic acids (in quantity of 10 – 30% of total load) is caused by presence of the reactive groups in resoles.

Phenol-formaldehyde resin manufacturing shops

“Safe technologies Inc” provides “know how” in the field of phenol-formaldehyde resin by the way of methanol free formaldehyde solution synthesis.

Methanol free concentrated formaldehyde solution process allows conducting synthesis of melamine-formaldehyde as well as phenol-formaldehyde resins on the same equipment in a single shop, for the fullest range of wood based panel fabrication.

Since this “know how” is unique in Russia, detailed information is available on request only.
